Wayne Rooney targeted by Leeds United fans as Elland Road chant shared
Wayne Rooney was goaded by the Leeds United supporters within Elland Road during the 3-0 win against Plymouth on Saturday.
The Whites put Plymouth to the sword, scoring three first-half goals within eight minutes courtesy of Daniel James, Joel Piroe and Brenden Aaronson.
However, the supporters took the opportunity to target the former Manchester United man in the Pilgrims’ dugout, as reported by journalist James Marshment [2 November] via X, as chants of “sacked in the morning” echoed around Elland Road.
He wrote: “‘Sacked in the morning’ ringing out around Elland Road. Shades of last season when Birmingham were torn apart and Rooney was axed a few days later.”
Leeds United march past Plymouth at Elland Road
The Whites looked completely out of sync at both ends of the pitch in the 0-0 draw against Bristol City last weekend, but clarity has been restored in West Yorkshire with a resounding victory against Plymouth.
Daniel Farke raised question marks heading into the fixture, opting to select Joel Piroe to lead the line again despite his lack of goals of late. However, the forward proved the decision was perfect as he added to his tally with the second goal at Elland Road.
Dan James produced another sensational performance for the hosts with his “wonderful” strike opening the floodgates – it finally feels like the Whites are living up to their potential as one of the best sides in the second tier.
Farke has stretched his side’s unbeaten run to eight matches since the 1-0 loss to Burnley in September, claiming the scalps of Yorkshire rivals Sheffield United on the way.
Leeds have now clawed the deficit to Championship leaders Sunderland, to just three points, and it is safe to say that the race for the title has well and truly begun for Farke.
