Wayne Rooney aims jibe at Leeds United fans after Plymouth Argyle defeat

Wayne Rooney couldn’t resist a dig at the Leeds United fans after his Plymouth Argyle side lost 3-0 at Elland Road on Saturday.

Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Joe Donnohue posted on X live from Rooney’s post-match press conference (2 November), with the visitors well-beaten after three first-half goals in quick succession.

The Argyle manager was serenaded to the sound of “you’re getting sacked in the morning” from all corners of Elland Road throughout the match, but told Donnodue that he “didn’t hear” such songs.

Rooney then took aim at the home faithful, saying: “Maybe they can sing a bit louder.”

Wayne Rooney can have no excuses after Leeds United v Plymouth

Given his team were so thoroughly second-best at Elland Road in a 3-0 defeat which could have been doubled, if not tripled by the home side, Rooney’s response isn’t in the least bit surprising.

The ex-England striker won’t have much to say in terms of positives about his own side’s performance, given Plymouth were hardly given a kick of the ball and failed to register a single attempt on goal.

Furthermore, it’s obvious that Rooney won’t be needing the help of a buoyant Elland Road crowd to be reminded of his current job prospects, with Argyle now in the Championship’s bottom three.

Having been sacked by Birmingham City in the wake of his last visit to LS11 on New Year’s Day – also a 3-0 loss – Rooney could be staring down the barrel of another dismissal following Saturday’s defeat.

Plymouth being so far off the pace and having Rooney in the dugout was a perfect storm for the Elland Road faithful, and they’ll certainly be keen to see the 39-year-old again sooner rather than later.
