Sky Sports pundit Gerrard Brand has said that a lot of people in football “want to put Leeds in their place” now they’re back in the Premier League.
Brand was talking on the latest episode of the Pitch to Post podcast when he was asked about the current slump in form Leeds are in and whether they should be concerned about relegation.
“I don’t think Leeds fans are concerned,” Brand said. “It’s nine defeats in 15 or six defeats in nine, but it’s also three wins in six in the Premier League, so it depends which way you look at it.
“The bottom line is they’re on 23 points after 18 games as a promoted side, which is well over target.
“I think there’s one half of football that loves the way Leeds play and another half that thinks it’s naive and hipster.
“They want to put Leeds in their place, I really believe that… There’s a lot of people who want to see Leeds lose.
“People see Leeds as one of the biggest sides in England and have a manager who was shortlisted for the FIFA manager of the year award.”
All Leeds aren’t we
We’d much rather be talked about than ignored.
But so many pundits have been lining up recently to talk about Leeds and how we’re going to get sucked into a relegation battle.
This definitely seems to be more a case of wanting it to happen than anything else.
Leeds United are well above their expected target for the season, and that’s to finish 17th. Anything above that is a bonus.
We’re above Wolves who were a model for us to emulate after their successful transition from the Championship to the Premier League.
We were never expecting to finish in the European spots this season and Andrea Radrizzani actually said himself he didn’t want it as it would be too soon.
There are issues. We need to find a way to win back-to-back games more often and we need more consistency.
But a question was asked on the Pitch to Post podcast – how do Leeds fans feel about this season? We’re very happy indeed at the moment. A win against Newcastle will make our collective smiles even wider.
