View: Leeds fans right to be fuming after official update for clash v Southampton
Plenty of Leeds United fans are fearing the worst after the Premier League announced that Peter Bankes will be in charge of the game tonight.
The game will make Leeds his most reffed side (17 games) and there are some very bad memories for supporters in that collection.
As Leeds fan Jo Bedford pointed out, he took charge of our defeats to Aston Villa and Crawley Town this season.
And before that was the QPR defeat when we lost to a goal scored by the hands of Nahki Wells. Patrick Bamford was awarded a penalty in that game but that was saved.
That game kick-started some nerves back in January last year that (thankfully) ultimately proved unfounded as we ended cantering to the title.
Some Leeds fans are looking at Bankes as the bogeyman and you can see why.
It doesn’t make for much better reading when you look at who’s in charge of VAR.
David Coote was involved in one of the season’s big VAR controversies when he didn’t punish Jordan Pickford for cleaning out Virgil van Dijk in an incident that left him out for the season.
Danny Murphy said that Coote had “bottled it” and wanted him pulled from his next game – which was Leeds against Wolves. He reffed it and we lost 1-0.
Coote was also in charge for the 3-0 defeat against Spurs and the other 1-0 against Wolves.
However, Leeds have been bucking the trend all season and a win tonight would see us cement a top-half finish in the Premier League.
We’ve got faith that Leeds have got enough for Southampton and the officials tonight.
The game is live on Sky Sports with a 6pm kick-off.
