Tony Dorigo waxes lyrical about Leeds United defender Pascal Struijk v Real Sociedad

Tony Dorigo was left watching on in awe as Pascal Struijk struck a “tremendous” equalising goal for Leeds United against Real Sociedad at Elland Road.

The 23-year-old’s strike after a quarter of an hour was a sight to behold, latching onto a free ball from 20 yards and pummelling a left-footed shot into the bottom corner of the Sociedad net.

After falling a goal down in the opening ten minutes of the mid-season friendly, the defender’s strike was just the response Jesse Marsch would have been after.

BT Sport pundit Dorigo, who was commentating live for LUTV (Friday 16 December), was astonished at the equalising goal.

He said: “Pascal, he really has been tremendous this season, having to play at left-back, we know how good his defensive qualities are.

“Going forward I think he has just got better and better and here, well, this is the shot of a centre half. No messing about, no fancy curling it in the top corner, give it a thump.

“What a goal and what a strike.”

Stunning strike

Where on earth that goal came from, only Struijk knows.

Following a nervy start from Marsch’s side, in which they fell a goal down within the opening ten minutes, this was exactly the response he would have wanted.

Such a reply from the Whites got the Elland Road faithful back behind the team following the early blip and allowed them to settle into the game instead of falling under increasing pressure.

Struijk has been a mighty figure for his American manager so far this campaign, having to fill in at left-back despite his lack of attacking ambition, and the goal was mightily deserved as a result.

Hopefully, from the fans’ point of view, the club will invest in the full-back department during the January transfer window, so the defender can finally be played in his preferred position at the heart of the back four.

A classy defensive operator and now a goal-scoring sensation – what isn’t there to like about Struijk?

In other Leeds United news, the club are set to stay in touch with the agent of a striker at a big club ahead of a potential January transfer.
