Tony Dorigo reacts instantly to ‘shocking’ controversy in Leeds win v Coventry
Tony Dorigo has described the decision to disallow Wilfried Gnonto’s late goal in Leeds United’s 2-0 win against Coventry City on Wednesday as “shocking”.
Gnonto had the ball in the back of the net and ran away celebrating what would have been the Whites’ third goal in the dying seconds of the Championship game on 5 February.
However, the goal was belatedly chalked off for offside, prompting Dorigo to accuse the linesman of changing his mind after protests from the Coventry players.
“Shocking. The assistant has no idea what is going on over there”, Dorigo said on LUTV (5 February, 9:40 pm)
“The players are shouting at him from Coventry, and that’s changed his mind.
“Well, he didn’t make a choice, initially.”
Dorigo, though, admitted that the Italian might have actually been offside after he turned a shot from Junior Firpo into the back of the net.
“You see Gnonto was looking over, thought he was offside”, the pundit said.
“It did look as he might have just strayed beyond, but was it going in from Firpo anyway?”
Leeds United baffling yet dominant v Coventry City
No Leeds United fan would have doubted the team’s ability to claim all three points at Coventry as they dominated Frank Lampard’s side from the first whistle.
Joel Piroe put the visitors in front just 17 minutes into the game, while Jayden Bogle doubled the lead in bizarre fashion nine minutes later.
However, the remaining 60 odds minutes of the game were as baffling as convincing it was.
Daniel Farke’s side continued to exert dominance over the Sky Blues, but could just not add to their goal tally.
It was particularly interesting as it had only been four days since they scored seven goals past Cardiff City at Elland Road in the Championship.

The fact that Gnonto’s goal at the end of the game was supposed to bring relief to Leeds after an evening of wastefulness was perhaps why Dorigo was so shocked to see it be disallowed.
Nevertheless, Farke will not be too fussed about how the game turned out as the Elland Road outfit remain atop the Championship table after 31 games, boasting a five-point lead over Burnley and Sheffield United.
