'Another tactic to stop Leeds getting promoted' – Many fans react to Graham Smyth EFL update

Leeds United are selling out their tickets every game as they hurtle towards the Premier League but fans might well find themselves shut out from matches because of Coronavirus.

That’s the latest update from the EFL by Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Graham Smyth.

This comes after PM Boris Johnson said on Monday that the government was prepared for a “significant expansion” of the virus.

Plenty of Leeds fans are unhappy with the news but it’s actually not the worst of the options that are possible.

There had been talk of cancelling big sporting events, with the Euros and the Premier League potentially at risk.

It’s a unique set of events and no one knows what would happen but any chance of the rest of this season being cancelled would be the ultimate disaster scenario for Leeds.

Fans getting shut out would be awful but the main thing is the games go ahead and Leeds are promoted.

As Smyth pointed out, these are just possibilities at the moment with the EFL in talks with the government, but the worldwide outlook on the virus doesn’t look great.

One fan said it was “The most Leeds things ever” while another just summed up his frustration by saying, “For the love of god, I’ve got Fulham tickets.”

Another fan said it was “Just another tactic to stop Leeds getting promoted”, although this might just be putting Leeds too much at the centre of a worldwide problem.

If things do get much worse then playing behind closed doors and watching the games on TV might be the best-case scenario, but it would be a very weird end to the season.

And Leeds – who are lifted week-in, week-out, by the loudest fans in the Championship – would undoubtedly be hit the hardest.
