‘That’s us out the top 2’, ‘I feel sick’ – Many Leeds fans react to Phil Hay Championship tweet

Leeds United fans don’t like anyone saying they will definitely get promoted. They’ve been here too many times for that.

Adam Forshaw genuinely got it in the neck last week from a lot of fans when he said promotion was now a “formality”.

Atheltic journalist Phil Hay didn’t go that far – he knows better after all the years of following Leeds – but he still got pelters after his Championship update on Tuesday night.

He relayed a tweet that looked into how many wins it would take for Leeds to secure promotion and said that he thinks 85 points will do it.

Hay said, “Take a look at this if you dare. 85 points, I reckon. Anyone with 85 points is there.”

Leeds are currently on 71 points, so five wins from the final nine games would deliver us to the promised land.

A win against Fulham a week on Saturday would bring the points total needed down.

It means that the game against Stoke on July 7 could well be the promotion party, although this really isn’t something that Leeds fans want to think about at the moment.

Nerves are kicking in big time – as you can see from the reactions to Phil Hay’s tweet.

Some journalists who are also Leeds fans got in on the act too. The Guardian’s Charlie Phillips said, “Oh god Phil, don’t”.

The Mail’s Amitai Winehouse took a more direct approach, posting a gif of someone punching a work colleague. All in jest, of course.
