'Surely that's illegal?' – Don Goodman can't believe what Leeds player got away with v West Brom
Leeds United had a terrible start to their game against West Brom this afternoon, conceding a goal after just over a minute.
That’s 11 goals that Leeds have conceded in the past few weeks after letting in just 10 in the first 21 games of the season.
It could have been worse for Leeds, too.
They fought their way back into the game without really creating much but were lucky not to concede a penalty after 23 minutes.
Mateusz Klich seemed to wrestle Romaine Sawyers to the ground off the ball as West Brom took a throw-in.
Goodman was convinced it should have been a spot-kick, but luckily the referee either didn’t see it properly or thought Sawyers made too much of it.
From a Leeds point of view it definitely looked a bit iffy.
“Well, it’s a risk, you always run the risk,” Goodman said in the live commentary of the game on Sky Sports (Wednesday, 5pm, Sky Sports).
“Romaine Sawyers is fuming. The referee Rob Jones is calling both players to have a word with them. When you hold someone like that… that is a dangerous game.
“That can’t be legal, surely? He just yanks him over. That’s got to be a penalty by the letter of the law. Surely that’s illegal?”
Goodman isn’t a favourite among Leeds fans but he’s got a point. Thankfully this one went our way.
A penalty could have been fatal to Leeds who have worked hard without really creating much of note.
If the score stays the same for long, fans will be calling for Patrick Bamford to come on in place of Eddie Nketiah – for the first time ever.
