Leeds United will finish in 13th place in the Premier League and a full 15 points above the drop zone, according to prediction site FiveThirtyEight.
The latest update of their season-ending Premier League table shows Leeds making inroads into the next group in the top-flight.
The site, headed by data expert Nate Silver, thinks that Leeds will end on 49 points, with Fulham taking the last of the relegation spots with 34 points.
Leeds will finish just one point behind Wolves, which would be a fantastic achievement. There’s a big seven-point gap back to 14th placed Crystal Palace.
Wolves the model
Wolves and Sheffield United were the clubs that Leeds would have modelled themselves on but this season has been a shocker for the Blades.
They’re predicted to finish rock bottom on a miserable 23 points and even that seems optimistic at the moment.
They’ve only recorded two points from their first 16 games in the league, which is the worst by far of any club in Premier League history.
To get to 23 points they’d have to turn that around to form that would see them safe from relegation if they’d done it over the full season.
After the two big wins over the festive break, Leeds are pulling away from the pack below them in the latest FiveThirtyEight prediction, and making inroads towards the top-half.
The clubs directly above them are Wolves, West Ham and Arsenal, and finishing above any of those come the end of the season would be a massive achievement and vindication of Marcelo Bielsa’s tactics.
They came into question after the 6-2 hammering by Man United. Two games, six points, six goals for and just one against has made that a distant memory already.
