‘Strange’ – Phil Hay claims confidence of Leeds star has ‘dropped noticeably’ after 2-0 defeat
Leeds United goalkeeper Kiko Casilla is starting to get some unwanted attention.
The former Real Madrid man is facing calls to be dropped at Elland Road by fans after yet another mistake potentially cost the Whites in the 2-0 defeat against Sheffield Wednesday.
Add to that the impressive performance of Illan Meslier at Arsenal, and it would be no surprise to see Casilla dropped against Queens Park Rangers.
The Athletic journalist Phil Hay spoke to fans after the game, admitting that the drop in performances from Casilla is strange after his efforts at the beginning of the season.
“It’s strange – since the Cardiff game, Casilla’s performance and his confidence has dropped noticeably,” he wrote in a Q&A for the Athletic.
“That was poor for the first goal today, a shot he should have saved. Keepers make mistakes but that was a gift to Wednesday and effectively gave them the game.”
Casilla is falling back into his old ways and has conceded 13 goals in his last six Championship games. That is already three more than he managed in the opening 21 fixtures in the league.
The Leeds defence must have little confidence in a keeper that consistently struggles from set-pieces, and has also conceded 76.47% of the shots on target he’s faced in the last 6 games.
It is hard to imagine where this drop in form has come from recently, and the stopper must be skating on thin ice around Marcelo Bielsa at the moment.
