‘Sewn up’ – Exclusive: Pundit makes big Leeds United claim ahead of Cardiff clash
We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United…
Paul Robinson thinks that Leeds can get promotion “sewn up” in their first two games after the first round of Championship results went their way.
Fulham lost to Brentford and West Brom could only draw with Birmingham on Saturday and it means the seven-point buffer to third is intact without Leeds even kicking a ball.
A win for Leeds against Cardiff today would see them move 10 points clear of Fulham, who travel to Elland Road next Saturday.
A win there would see a 13-point gap built up and that could pretty much rule Fulham out of the race for the top-two.
Brentford have it all to do with a game against West Brom on Friday.
Talking exclusively to MOT Leeds News Robinson said, “It’s a tough start for Leeds but after the results on Saturday I think Leeds could have it sewn up in the first couple of weeks.
“If they can beat Cardiff and then take three points off Fulham, their nearest challenger in third, that creates a huge gap. That seven-point gap could be 10 on Monday and 13 next Sunday.
“It’s a tough start but an outstanding opportunity to put things to bed really quickly.
“The Cardiff game won’t be easy but it will be made a lot easier by an empty stadium. The Cardiff stadium is normally a very intimidating place and Cardiff and Leeds have had a rivalry.
“Cardiff away in an empty stadium is a completely different prospect. I really think Leeds can get it done early if they get a result in these first two games.”
Both Fulham and West Brom looked way off their best on Saturday and Leeds have a massive chance to put down a Premier League marker on Sunday.
Results couldn’t have been any better and now it’s up to Leeds to prove that all their hard training during lockdown is going to pay off.
Leeds fans don’t want to count chickens in the Championship after last season but a win today would get even the nerviest fans singing.
