‘Staggered’ – Ally McCoist makes big Leeds prediction ahead of clash v Barnsley

talkSPORT pundit Ally McCoist has said that he will be “staggered” if Leeds United don’t go on to win promotion this season.

He said that he always thought this was the year that Leeds would get back to the top-flight and that he’s had no doubts, even after the loss against Cardiff after the season restarted.

McCoist was previewing the big game against Barnsley on Thursday night when Leeds can take a big step towards the top-flight.

After Brentford won on Wednesday, Leeds can’t secure promotion at Elland Road but a win would mean they would be promoted if either West Brom or Brentford drop any points against Huddersfield or Stoke respectively.

Talking on the Breakfast show on talkSPORT (Thursday, 6.30am) McCoist said, “Leeds have been out of the top flight for so long it’s remarkable. But I always thought this year was going to be the year they got back to the top flight.

“People were saying they were falling apart after the Cardiff game but I just thought the Cardiff game, fighting for the play-offs themselves, that could happen.

“Since then they’ve only dropped two points against a Luton side who are fighting for their lives. They’ve been in great form, I’d be staggered if this isn’t the year Leeds went up.

“The top-flight will be looking forward to the return of Leeds United.”

Excitement (and nerves) among Leeds fans is reaching fever pitch as promotion moves ever closer.

There was hope that Brentford would slip up last night and leave tonight’s game against Barnsley a promotion decider, but the Bees notched their eighth win in a row – an incredible record. That’s one game more than Leeds’ longest winning run this season.

However, whatever else happens, a win tonight against a Barnsley side who are rock bottom of the Championship would leave Leeds needing just one point from their two remaining games.

And, if Brentford or West Brom dropped any points in their last two it would be all over.

We would have preferred Leeds to win promotion on the pitch. But, now that can’t happen tonight we’re more than happy for it to be confirmed before we take to the pitch at Pride Park. Both the Baggies (Friday v Huddersfield) and Brentford (Saturday v Stoke) play before Leeds on Sunday.

A promotion guard of honour by the Derby players? Now that would be something really special.
