‘ST holders are getting nothing’ – Phil Hay details Leeds stance on controversial PL issue

The controversial issue of Premier League games being shown on pay-per-view isn’t going anywhere, with Leeds United fans facing having to pay £14.95 to watch next week’s game against Crystal Palace.

A second lockdown – due to come into effect in England this week – is going to put even more focus on the £14.95 charges that have garnered so much criticism in recent weeks.

Athletic journalist Phil Hay said that Leeds were “opposed” to the PPV concept but that there was “no alternative on the table” at the last vote.

Hay said that Leeds want the option to offer streams themselves, as they did in the Championship last season on LUTV.

He also pointed out that “We’re still in a situation where PL ST holders are getting nothing for their money.”

Let clubs stream games themselves

Tonight’s game against Leicester is on the flagship Monday Night Football show, while West Brom and Fulham fans have to pay £14.95 for the privilege of watching their sides play at 5.30pm on Monday.

But the Leeds game next week against Crystal Palace will be one of the last PPV games before the international break and the next Premier League meeting.

It’s good to hear that Leeds are opposed in principle to PPVs and we imagine that there will be more clubs against it after seeing the reaction from fans.

We think a system where Leeds can offer streams themselves would go a long way to making fans happier.

That way, Leeds can offer the games free to season ticket holders who are getting the raw end of the deal at the moment.

Other fans would be far happier paying £9.95 in the knowledge that the majority of the money will go straight to the club.

The problem is that Premier League rights are guarded very carefully and individual club streams could open a can of worms that Sky don’t want to face.
