‘Smart’ Georginio Rutter unlocks Leeds United after ‘lovely’ moment in Brighton defeat

Brighton star Georginio Rutter faced off against his former club Leeds United on Saturday.

Leeds fell to defeat against Brighton as Danny Welbeck and Diego Gomes secured a 3-0 win for the home side at the AMEX.

Daniel Farke’s side struggled, showcased by Gabriel Gudmundsson’s defensive effort for Brighton’s opener from the ex-Manchester United forward.

Rutter represented an ex-Leeds star at Brighton, and he proved to be a thorn in the Whites’ side throughout the 90 minutes.

The Frenchman made his presence felt as Rutter caught the eye above most as the south coast outfit secured a simple win.

Georginio Rutter steals show vs Leeds United

Rutter signed for Brighton from Leeds in August 2024 and has proven to be a shrewd addition for a side who rarely gets transfers wrong.

The Frenchman contributed to 12 goals in 32 games in his debut season, but had failed to score in his opening nine outings this time around.

The versatile attacker added to his assist tally for the campaign against the Whites, providing the final pass for Gomes to make it 3-0.

Rutter had previously let the ball go through his legs before the Paraguayan netted his first of the afternoon, to high praise from ex-England international Matt Upson.

He said: “It’s clever play from Georginio Rutter, who makes the front post run, but knows Gomes is arriving behind him, it’s a lovely dummy here by the Brighton number 10.

The former defender was equally as impressed by Rutter during the build-up for Gomes’ second as he handed out another rave review.

The co-commentator added: “He [Gomes] runs straight to Georginio Rutter to pat him on the back. Rutter with a really smart cutback because it’s no accident this ball.

He’s fully aware of where Gomes is, and he cuts it back with his left foot. Good pace on it, Gomes can just slide it in.

Daniel Farke loved working with Rutter at Leeds

The Whites miss someone like the 23-year-old to help dig them out of situations like they found themselves in at the AMEX.

Noah Okafor showcased some quality, but was unable to truly make that count before he was taken off late on.

Farke previously worked with Rutter in his first season at Elland Road and was clearly impressed by what he saw from the Frenchman.

Back in October 2023, he said: “His talent and potential is outstanding, but lots of work is necessary… He can be really, really special in the future.

It looks as if the future is now, as Rutter put on a special showing against Leeds and ultimately pushed the dagger in as his new side secured a routine victory.
