Sky Sports pundit furious with officials amid major delay in Leeds United v Arsenal

Clinton Morrison was furious with the officials after a problem with their technology saw a 35 minute delay in Leeds vs Arsenal on Sunday.

The game kicked off on time at Elland Road but lasted just 23 seconds before a problem with the referee’s equipment which couldn’t be resolved, leading to the players being taken off the pitch and the game being halted temporarily.

But while speaking live on Sky Sports [16 October] the former Crystal Palace striker admitted that it simply wasn’t good enough and questioned why the technology wasn’t tested before the game started.

“The commentators are talking about postponing the game,” he said.

“I can’t see that happening, with all these fans in here, they would never be able to get away with this. I feel like they’re driving to London to go and get new equipment, to come back. I don’t know what’s going on.

“All I’ve got is the co-commentators. Arteta is still out there, Jesse Marsch is sitting down.

“All I’ve got to say is this ain’t good enough. You have to test this, your ear piece and all of that before the game starts. You must know. And I understand there could be a fault, I totally get that, but it’s taken nearly five or ten minutes and the game still hasn’t kicked off yet.

“It’s not good enough.”

Too long

Obviously the referees cannot control the fact that there was a power cut at the stadium and it affected things like VAR, goal-line technology and the referee’s communication with the match centre.

However the fact there doesn’t seem to be a contingency plan in place in case something like this happens is really hard to believe in this day and age.

What would have happened if it never started working again? Would the fans have been sent home and the game been postponed until a future date?

If so that’s pathetic and once again is a slap in the face of match-going fans who would once again be out of pocket and be forced to give up more time away from families and potentially work.

It’s something the Premier League must consider for the future, as just because this instance happened to turn out rather well in the end doesn’t mean they will next time around elsewhere.
