‘Someone told me’ – Sky Sports act as Phil Hay claims Leeds lodge ‘falling apart’ complaint

You might have noticed something different about the Sky Sports coverage of the Leeds United win against Barnsley last night.

The crowd noise was muted to the point of it almost not being there, and there was no repeat of the “Leeds are falling apart” song that Sky had put seemingly on repeat during the 5-0 win against Stoke.

The Athletic journalist Phil Hay said that Leeds were unhappy about this and “had words” with the broadcaster during that game.

Hay made the revelation ahead of the Barnsley game in a fan Q&A on Thursday.

“I know that Leeds have been a bit unhappy about the ‘falling apart chants’. You don’t want to be petty about it but at the same time, I feel like it’s a bit below the belt and unnecessary for Sky to be doing that.

“Someone told me that words were had during the Stoke game so I’ll be interested to see what happens this evening.”

Some Leeds fans might have been too stressed to notice the lack of crowd noise in the Barnsley game.

It was there but almost imperceptible and much lower than for the West Brom v Fulham game this week. There were no songs.

After the game, a Leed fan asked, “Do we know why was there no crowd noise on Sky Phil? Anything to do with Leeds flagging up the “falling apart” chants?”

Hay replied saying, “Possibly. I know that Leeds weren’t especially happy about that. It was a bit below the belt IMO.”

We’ve preferred games with crowd noise since lockdown but we appreciate it’s a personal preference.

Many Leeds fans were wound up by Sky playing the ‘falling apart’ song but lots of others said they weren’t bothered.

Some pointed out that Leeds fans sing the song anyway.

However, it obviously upset Leeds to the point that they made a complaint.

And that seems to have sent Sky Sports the other way, muting the crowd noise to the point it might not have been there.

One good thing about this was being able to hear the celebrations from the directors box.

However, if Sky are reading this, we’ve got a message for you. If Leeds are promoted ahead of the Derby game then you have our permission to play “Leeds are Falling Apart” on loop at top volume.

It will be your last chance to do it in the EFL.
