Sky commentator slams ‘really poor’ Wilfried Gnonto after Leeds United v Southampton moment

Sky Sports commentator Andy Hinchcliffe slammed Wilfried Gnonto for a “really poor” moment in Leeds United versus Southampton.

The Whites were beaten 1-0 by the Saints in Sunday’s (26 May) playoff final at a packed out Wembley, meaning they face another season in the Championship.

There was one action from 20-year-old Italian forward Gnonto where he failed to pick out Joel Piroe for a return pass in the first half that Hinchcliffe was particularly baffled by.

Speaking live on Sky Sports Football (26 May), he said: “It was strong centre-forward play but then he’s reliant on Gnonto playing a good pass.

“He’s made the run off his man it’s just the pass from Gnonto was really poor.”

It was a hugely frustrating moment for Leeds, who had to that point made a really energetic and vibrant start to the crucial clash at Wembley.

But it was kind of indicative of what was happening to Leeds in the early stages of the game as Daniel Farke’s men had plenty of the ball but did not always have the composure to make it count.

Piroe had done some excellent centre-forward work to protect the ball and find Gnonto, who just needed to be a bit cooler with his ball over the top towards his teammate.

It was not necessarily a game-killing moment but in these games you just need to see a bit more composure and cooler headers and that is exactly what Gnonto was lacking at that moment in time.

Soon after, Saints took the lead through Adam Armstrong and it was an uphill battle after going into the break 1-0 down.
