Simon Walton slams Leeds United for signing Daniel James after loss v Southampton

Simon Walton has slammed Leeds United for spending as much as they did on winger Daniel James in the summer transfer window.

James, 23, joined the Whites in a club-record deal worth up to £30million from Manchester United on transfer deadline day.

However, the Wales international is yet to impress at Elland Road and was underwhelming yet again on Saturday as Marcelo Bielsa’s men lost 1-0 to Southampton at St Mary’s.

Ex-Leeds player Walton, who was speaking on BBC Radio Leeds after the match on Saturday [5:25pm], is clearly unhappy with the millions spent on James when he wasn’t a priority signing.

“I think his lack of end product in terms of £25million that we spent on him, £25million if you are Man City, Chelsea or Newcastle now, probably you are a substitute there,” said Walton.

“The £25million that we spent on him and his lack of overall end product to make him a top wide player, I just feel that the money could have better spent.

“I just feel we didn’t necessarily need him.”

Waste of money?

It’s still early days in James’ career at Elland Road but it’s definitely fair to say that so far, the ex-Swansea winger has failed to deliver.

Leeds agreed to pay a lot of money for James in the summer transfer window and while we were happy to have the winger on board, it did beg the question as to why the club had so much to spend and didn’t add to other key areas.

We could have gotten away with it if we didn’t buy James in the summer. But our shortcomings in the full-back areas, in the centre of the midfield and up front are being laid bare right now due to injuries and selection issues.

With the money that was spent on James, Leeds could have brought in a number of options to add some strength in depth. Instead, Bielsa is having to rely in players like Adam Forshaw and Tyler Roberts – two players who struggled to light it up for us in the Championship, let alone the Premier League.

We need depth in January. But we know that Bielsa won’t bother signing anyone.
