‘Set our bar high’ – Leeds star makes big claim about 20/21 PL season
Leeds United attacker Jack Harrison has said that the club is on the right path this season and that European qualification is a possibility.
The Elland Road club have made a great start to the Premier League season under Marcelo Bielsa, winning three of their opening six matches.
With a win on Monday night against Leicester City they can move to third in the league, behind just Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur (via WhoScored).
Speaking in an interview with The Telegraph, Harrison said that he and his teammates would love to qualify for Europe this year.
“We have to set our bar high and as a team always trying to reach our goals and we would absolutely love to qualify for Europe,” Harrison said.
“It’s a high standard, but if we continue on our path I don’t see why it’s not possible.”
Lofty ambitions
Under usual circumstances, European qualification would seem slightly overly ambitious for a promoted side, but this does appear to be a rather unusual season so far with Everton, Southampton and Wolves all in the top six.
Meanwhile, Arsenal are ninth, Manchester City are 10th and Manchester United are 15th, while Wolves did achieve a similar feat in their first season back in the Premier League two years ago.
Following the club’s promotion to the Premier League last season, owner Andrea Radrizzani said that their initial aim was to secure Premier League status for at least the next three years, before looking to target the top six (via Leeds Live).
Given the fortunes of Sheffield United between their debut campaign and now, where the Blades are struggling at the bottom of the table, Leeds will understand how quickly things can change at the top-flight level and know that they need to keep pushing in the transfer market to improve their squad.
As Radrizzani states, the first target must be to remain in the division and continue to build on the progress of recent years under Bielsa before thinking too far ahead.
Anything else is a massive bonus.
