Roy Keane: David Moyes will love what Weston McKennie did in Leeds United v West Ham United

Roy Keane believes David Moyes would have been happy to have one of his players take a throw-in the way Weston McKennie did when he set up Rodrigo’s goal for Leeds United at West Ham on Sunday.

Rodrigo’s first-half strike gave the Whites the lead in the 17th minute when he connected beautifully with a long-range throw by McKennie.

The USA midfielder has done little of note in his time as a Leeds United player but Micah Richards was blown away by his technique when assisting Rodrigo’s goal from the touchline.

Leeds United

Speaking on Sky Sports Premier League (02:25pm, 21 May), Richards said: “This is the best angle in the slow-mo. Absolutely brilliant from the [Sky Sports] staff.

Dave Jones said that McKennie threw the ball like it was a javelin, prompting Keane to add: “David Moyes would be happy with that.”

Have him

At least McKennie can say he’s now done something useful as a Leeds United player.

Unfortunately, that useful thing he did was throw a football, which gets you called a quarterback where he comes from.

McKennie’s been a woeful addition for Leeds but in a way, it’s hardly his fault.

Jesse Marsch was handed too much control over transfers and he just opted to sign Americans and players he’d previously managed in Europe.

McKennie’s American and Leeds needed a new midfielder in January. Juventus were willing to get rid of him (surprise, surprise) and that meant the deal was done.

We doubt that Victor Orta did his usual in-depth scouting on McKennie and we doubt that there was any kind of Marcelo Bielsa-level examination by Marsch.

He was signed for the sake of making a signing and he ticked a few boxes.

We just hope that the 49ers didn’t have an overall say on the deal as that won’t bode well at all for us going forward.
