‘Right thing to do’ – Ally McCoist delivers Leeds verdict after debate rages on talkSPORT
A Leeds United fan put in a very eloquent argument on talkSPORT on Thursday as the furore continued over the non-goal in the Aston Villa v Sheffield United game.
Leeds have come heavily into the conversation after the game in the Championship against Villa last season, when Dean Smith and John Terry raged on the sidelines after Mateusz Klich scored with a Villa player on the ground.
Marcelo Bielsa ordered his players to let Villa score.
There was no sign of such sportsmanship on Wednesday and although Ally McCoist and Jamie O’Hara tried to draw a distinction between the two incidents, the Leeds fan held his own.
He said, “Dean Smith was calling out Leeds players for scoring. That should have been Dean Smith last night. The Villa players knew it was a goal.”
Talking on Sports Breakfast (talkSPORT, Thursday, 9am) McCoist replied, “It should have been a goal but you can’t… you’d be doing it all day. I don’t think you can have players making the decisions instead of the ref.
“I get what happened at Elland Road and what you’re saying about hypocrisy, but that was the right thing to do. But when you let others make the decisions…”
The Leeds fan pointed out that all Mateusz Klich had done is play to the whistle and asked why the Leeds players were supposed to make the decision that day.
Jamie O’Hara said, “And that showed great sportsmanship. But, at the end of the day that showed sportsmanship. What happened here, they’re looking at the ref and asking if his goalline technology is working.”
What’s the difference?
It was great to hear a Leeds fan making such a good point, so eloquently on talkSPORT.
He refused to be cowed by McCoist and O’Hara and stuck to his guns, pointing out that all the Leeds players did was play to the whistle.
Why was it the right thing to do to let Villa score, but the wrong thing to let Sheffield United score?
There were six Aston Villa players almost on the line and all looking at the ball.
They would all have known it was a goal.
Perhaps the difference is that the Sheffield United players were better behaved and didn’t start arguing and jostling with the Villa players.
And Chris Wilder and his assistant didn’t start screaming at the Villa players from the sidelines.
Villa won a point through bad sportsmanship last season and they need to own it.
