Reliable journalist: ‘Crippling’ PL blow plunges EFL into promotion crisis ahead of Weds meeting
Journalist Alan Nixon has said that the Premier League has dealt the EFL a “crippling” blow ahead of its crunch meeting on Wednesday.
In a report in the Sun, Nixon claims that EFL clubs will not be able to vote on how to conclude their seasons as the Premier League still hasn’t guaranteed promotion and relegation.
The FA has said that the Premier League has to relegate three teams but this still hasn’t been officially ratified and the report claims this might not happen ahead of a crunch UEFA deadline on May 25.
Nixon claims this has plunged the EFL into “a crisis” and that it will have a big effect on the meeting on Wednesday.
He quoted a club official as saying, “We cannot vote on promotion and relegation in our divisions as we still don’t know if there is a clear path.”
Nixon added on Twitter that it means the “EFL cannot guarantee promotion all the way to the top.”

Things were looking very bright for Leeds ahead of Monday’s Premier League meeting.
And the official noises that came out of the meeting were good too. The Premier League and the FA put forward a united front about relegation and promotion.
However, a report in the Telegraph yesterday claimed some clubs would block promotion to the Premier League if the top flight played on and the Championship was abandoned.
The Premier League needs to decide how it is going to settle the issue of relegation and get that decision officially ratified.
And it seems that the EFL is in limbo until that happens.
The path has been cleared for both the Premier League and the Championship to continue.
The government has said sport can start again behind close doors from June 1 if safe and the Bundesliga is ready to show it can be done when their fixtures kick-off on Saturday.
For now, though, there’s yet more promotion uncertainty for Leeds United fans.
