Sky Sports Pundit furious with Luke Ayling 'weak' defending in first half of Leeds United v Fulham

Luke Ayling was blasted for his “weak” defending in the first-half of Leeds United’s clash with Fulham by commentator Andy Walker on Sunday [23 October].

The fan favourite defender was handed his first start of the season by Jesse Marsch ahead of Rasmus Kristensen at right-back, but was arguably at fault when the London side equalised midway through the second half after Rodrigo had given them the lead.

Ayling was marking Aleksandar Mitrovic but was outmuscled as the Serbian headed home at the near post, and while commentating for CNBC [23 October, 14:28] Walker, who has worked for Sky Sports too, blasted the experienced defender for not doing more to prevent the goal from happening.

“Ayling’s got to be stronger in his defensive capabilities there with Mitrovic,” he said.

“Mitrovic is all muscle. He loves a physical challenge, and Ayling was weak.”

Leeds had started brightly and then started to fade away during the first half before Rodrigo’s goal, and momentum was building for the team.

But a silly individual error to let the biggest goal threat of the opposition team have a free header inside the six-yard box is just pathetic and a huge part of the reason why Leeds are in the mess they’re currently in.

Ayling is experienced enough to know that he has to do better, and Walker was quick to call him out for his poor handling of the situation.

With the game finely poised at half-time at 1-1, the team must refocus for the second half and get back to what they did well in order to snap this seven-game winless run.

The fans are loud and behind the team, but they need to be given a reason to cheer so hopefully this Ayling error will be a forgotten memory by the time full-time comes around.
