‘Play Kiko in place of Phillips’ – Some Leeds fans purring after Casilla move v Boro
There’s one clip from the 4-0 win against Middlesbrough that had lots of Leeds United fans purring with delight – and you can see why.
It happened in the 23rd minute with the score at 1-0.
Luke Ayling played the ball up to Helder Costa on the right wing before getting it back and looking for Ben White.
His pass was a hospital one and it would have spelled trouble for Leeds with Ashley Fletcher almost through on the back pass, except Kiko Casilla was brilliantly placed to mop up.
This is the situation (above). Casilla is rushing out to take care of the stray pass and Ashley Fletcher is set to get to the ball a close second.
Most goalkeepers, certainly in the Championship, would put their foot through the ball. Not Casilla.
He just drags the ball casually to the side with his right foot and watches Fletcher slide. And slide. He might still be sliding.
Craig Wilson, on the levers of the official Leeds Twitter account summed it up brilliantly and also posted the clip so you can watch the moment in all of its glory.
He said, “Alexa, show me the definition of “Sent him for a hot dog”.
Casilla has had fans doubting him. Towards the end of last season, he made a string of errors, culminating in a catastrophic mistake in the play-off second-leg against Derby which let them back into the game.
However, this season he’s been brilliant. Leeds have only let in 10 goals across 19 games and Casilla has helped keep 10 clean sheets.
This just shows how confident he’s feeling at the moment and although it left some fans with their hearts in their mouths, it’s the sort of thing we were expecting from the former Real Madrid man.
This is what the Leeds fans made of it, with one saying Casilla could play instead of Phillips against Huddersfield on Saturday. We think he might be right.
Not everyone was convinced though with one fan saying…
Come on… It’s the beautiful game after all.
