Piroe decision made, Ampadu change – Leeds starting XI v Sheffield Wednesday

Daniel Farke has made seven changes to his Leeds United starting line-up for the Championship clash against Sheffield Wednesday on Sunday.

Illan Meslier starts in goal despite his costly error against Hull City, as confirmed by Leeds’ official X account [19 January], while Joel Piroe returns after missing the 1-0 FA Cup victory over Harrogate with a muscle injury.

Star defender Pascal Struijk is ruled out of the contest so a defensive tweak is made as Ethan Ampadu partners Joe Rodon in the heart of defence.

Illan Meslier starts between the sticks looking to redeem himself after his mistake led to the Whites dropping points against Hull in their last league match.

Jayden Bogle and Sam Byram are the full-backs with Ampadu partnering Joe Rodon at centre-back due to Struijk’s absence in a role that he is comfortable in.

The formidable duo of Joe Rothwell and Ao Tanaka return in midfield after the win over Harrogate after only the former started last weekend.

Dan James and Manor Solomon are the two wingers selected by Farke to cause problems for their local rivals.

Brenden Aaronson plays through the middle, looking to continue his good run of form which has resulted in four goal contributions in seven matches.

Joel Piroe returns up front after missing the cup clash, looking to increase his ten goals in 26 Championship matches so far.

The Whites have drawn their last two league matches and will be hoping to regain top spot after Sheffield United overhauled them yesterday with a 2-0 win over Norwich.

Farke’s side have won their last two matches against the Owls and have scored eight goals in their last five matches.
