Phil Hay: This is how Leeds feel about Premier League clash being postponed
The Whites game against Southampton next week is in the balance and in danger of being postponed, and Leeds United are open to the possibility, according to Phil Hay.
If postponed it would enable Southampton to play their FA Cup game against Shrewsbury ahead of the fourth round matches the following weekend.
Writing on The Athletic, Hay said that Leeds are “open to the idea”.
“Discussions are still at an early stage but The Athletic has been told that Leeds are open to the idea of postponing next week’s game,” Hay wrote.
“Contact was made with the club by the Premier League and the fact that Leeds seem willing to reschedule the fixture suggests that a new date is likely to be agreed.”
Greater good
If the game is postponed, Leeds would have a 10-day break between playing Brighton and the Newcastle game on Tuesday, January 26.
That will give Leeds a very relaxed January schedule compared to their Premier League rivals.
If Leeds had beaten Crawley, then we’d be playing Brighton on Saturday, Southampton on the Wednesday, before an FA Cup game, the Newcastle clash and the game against Leicester on January 31. It’s made us tired just typing all of that out.
The Southampton game would need to be rescheduled for a midweek but Leeds have plenty of these free.
Leeds have already played two games more than Man City, Fulham, Aston Villa and Burnley, and one more than Newcastle, Everton, Tottenham and Man United.
As far as fixtures go, we’re in a good position, especially as we’ve only got the Premier League to focus on now.
It would mean that Shrewsbury don’t have to forfeit the FA Cup game and it seems that the Leeds game will be a victim for the greater good.
We’d prefer for Leeds to get games in the bag and points on the board, but we understand the situation and a 10-day mini winter break certainly won’t do the Leeds players any harm.
