Phil Hay shares surprise with major Leeds United decision v Leicester City

Phil Hay has shared his astonishment with one major decision that went against Leeds United in the first half v Leicester City.

After bringing the ball under control, Rodrigo was kicked by Foxes defender Caglar Soyuncu which forced the Whites forward to go to ground.

Both referee David Coote and Jarred Gillet, the official in charge of VAR, decided not to award a penalty.

Hay tweeted: “That’s been a good half. Shape and organisation is there. Firpo with the best chance and Harrison with a decent one too.

“Surprised they didn’t pay more attention to Soyuncu’s kick on Rodrigo in the box, but still.”

Massive improvement

It was much better under Jesse Marsch. The team maintained and maybe even improved on their tenacious pressing which continuously caused Leicester problems.

It may not have been the result many the Whites needed and many fans would have wanted but there were so many clear positives to take.

The game could have been changed in the first half had the officials made the right call.

The lack of consistency between refereeing decisions in England is simply a joke.

What is the difference between that challenge on Rodrigo and the one that Leeds were penalised for as Mateusz Klich challenged Antonio Rudiger at Stamford Bridge earlier in the season?

That was awarded as a penalty against the Whites which resulted in them losing the game and hopefully the Whites don’t look back on the decision as a decisive moment in the match that got away from them.

Overall, though, it was a much more assured performance from Leeds under the new manager.

The American has made a really positive start, one that can certainly be built on and the longer he works with this team, the better they will get.
