Phil Hay: Rain ‘worse than usual’ as weather update emerges for Leeds United clash v Blackburn Rovers

Phil Hay admits the rain is “worse than usual” in Lancashire as Leeds United head to Ewood Park to take on Blackburn on Saturday afternoon.

Heavy rain is drenching the North-West with the Met Office issuing yellow weather warnings for rain and wind in the area.

There hasn’t been any indication that the game could be called off or delayed due to the downpour but The Athletic journalist Hay admits the weather isn’t great at all ahead of kick-off.

“Bring a paddle, imo. And a snorkel,” he said on Twitter on 9 December.

“Joking aside, drive safe if you’re making the trip because it’s worse than usual.”

Postponement?

You wouldn’t have thought that this game would be called off just over an hour ago until kick-off when extremely wet weather was already forecasted.

However, we saw that the authorities care little for fans making long journeys to matches with Alfreton v Walsall in the FA Cup being called off last week six minutes before kick-off due to a frozen pitch.

Leeds fans haven’t had to make the longest of journeys to Ewood Park but the weather shouldn’t be something that affects the kick-off.

What could happen, however, is that the referee decides to halt the game midway through if puddles start to form on the pitch and start to impact the movement of the ball and increase the risk of injuries.

Let’s hope that isn’t the case because we don’t need any fixtures being re-arranged in what is an already very busy festive period for the Whites.

Leeds’ form has been brilliant so they will want to keep up the momentum too.

In other Leeds United news, Patrick Bamford is now in a “very difficult” situation at Elland Road.
