Phil Hay: Joe Gelhardt going to be a steal for £1million

Phil Hay has delivered a huge verdict on Joe Gelhardt’s future after his game-changing cameo for Leeds United on Saturday afternoon v Wolves.

The Athletic journalist has claimed that the Whites attacker is going to be a steal for the reported £1million Leeds paid to sign him from Wigan last summer.

He came off the bench for Mateusz Klich and played a massive role in securing a point for his side as he won the penalty for Rodrigo’s equaliser.

Hay, via his personal Twitter handle, said, “Bielsa singled out Cooper’s first-half performance for praise. Kept Traore’s pace at bay. Rodrigo dug in when it mattered today, did himself credit. Gelhardt’s going to be a steal for £1m.”

What a talent

There have been calls for Bielsa to play the 19-year-old more often and after his cameo against Southampton, the Argentine opted to do the same on Saturday.

Even he would’ve been surprised by the sort of impact the young attacker had on proceedings.

He didn’t seem like a player who’s still to start a Premier League game as he held the ball with such confidence and constantly looked to make things happen in the final third.

Leeds United

Gelhardt was relentless when it came to closing down and it was almost impossible to dispossess him, given how well he was in control of the ball at his feet.

He deservedly won the penalty for Leeds’ equaliser and it could be argued that the Whites stood a very good chance to win the game.

That said, they’ll still take the draw but there was plenty in this game to be proud of and the Elland Road faithful clearly enjoyed that spectacle.
