Phil Hay fumes at ‘shambles’ he saw in Leeds United win v Preston North End

Phil Hay was left fuming at a moment that he labelled a “shambles” from Leeds United in their 2-1 win over Preston North End on Sunday (21 January).

The visitors took the lead after just two minutes at Elland Road through Will Keane with the home side’s defending left a lot to be wanting.

The Athletic reporter Hay, posting on his official X account (21 January) was not too happy with what he saw from the home side.

“A shambles at a free-kick from Ben Whiteman. Header back across goal falls to Liam Millar who lashes a shot into the six-yard box.

“Will Keane is there to turn home an easy finish. First attack. 0-1 #lufc.”

Dan James equalised not long after before Joel Piroe scored a dramatic injury-time penalty to secure a 2-1 victory for Leeds, who are four points back of second-place Southampton.

Should do better

As start’s go this was a pretty poor one from a Leeds perspective, with the defence just all at sea after Ben Whiteman’s delivery into the box from a free-kick.

Keane really could not miss with the opportunity and it was a moment that no one in a home shirt will look back on with too much pride.

Dan James levelled the scoring only four minutes later to restore parity but it is the kind of moment that Leeds can ill-afford in the second half of this campaign with the race for automatic promotion really heats up.

Southampton were victors against Swansea City on Saturday (20 January), while Ipswich face table-toppers Leicester City on Monday (22 January) so there’s going to be a lot of twists and turns in the coming weeks.

Hopefully Leeds won’t have too many more of these defensive nightmares in the coming weeks because they need to be more switched on as not every game will produce dramatic victories like this.
