It not just fans who are feeling the nerves as Leeds United home in on promotion to the Premier League.
During the 1-1 draw against Luton, the Leeds players started sniping at each other, described by Kalvin Phillips as “players arguing and stuff like that“.
Gjanni Alioski slammed the turf with both hands after Helder Costa missed a simple header to secure the points late on.
And Pablo Hernandez – normally the meekest and mildest of players – got into a spat with Luton manager Nathan Jones after he called him a “hijo de puta” (son of a b***h in Spanish).
It led to clearing-the-air talks, according to The Athletic journalist Phil Hay, with players meeting on Wednesday morning at Thorp Arch.
Hay relayed the meeting as follows: “Wednesday just gone saw a clear-the-air meeting at Thorp Arch where Leeds United’s players took the opportunity to say what they were feeling.
“They spoke when they first checked into the training ground and reminded each other that they were well-positioned, they were very close to the line and they were infinitely capable of stepping it up.”
It seems to have worked.
Leeds were much, much better against Blackburn at Ewood Park on Saturday.
They came out of the traps fast and got their noses in front courtesy of Patrick Bamford’s 15th goal of the season.
Blackburn were spirited but ultimately they didn’t have the skill or the stamina to keep up with Leeds.
The three points were much needed too – all of Leeds’ promotion rivals won too.
With Brentford coming up behind like a train, it’s critical that Leeds stay ahead of West Brom at the top of the table.
If it’s two from thre, then we just need to make sure we’re top.
As for the clear-the-air meeting, we think it shows how much the players care and also how well managed the squad is.
There could have been recriminations the next day in training, there could have been blame apportioned.
Instead, the players reminded each other how good they can be and how close they are to their goal.
We’re proud of each and every one of them.
