Phil Hay details brilliant Bielsa reaction as Hernandez scored incredible last-gasp winner

Can you imagine the limbs if Leeds United fans had been in the stadium when Pablo Hernandez scored that last-gasp winner?

It’s a goal that puts Leeds on the brink of the Premier League after 16 years in the wilderness.

Its importance can’t be overstated and the Leeds Twitter feed exploded with relief from fans who couldn’t believe what they’d witnessed.

Marcelo Bielsa is made of different stuff.

His reaction when the goal went in? As relayed by Phil Hay on The Athletic, he “literally turned away, like he always does. Bet his heart was going though.”

It’s classic Bielsa. And we wouldn’t have him any other way, although we’d love to know what was going through his mind as he looked away.

After the game, Bielsa said that he couldn’t enjoy the games at the moment and wouldn’t be able to until Leeds are promoted.

We obviously want Leeds to be promoted for the club, for the fans and for Andrea Radrizzani.

But we also want Marcelo Bielsa to get what he deserves for an absolutely Herculean effort with this squad of Leeds players.

He has invested so much into the city and the club, and he’s a manager who hasn’t enjoyed a great deal of success in terms of silverware.

We know just how much this promotion would mean to him. One of the most enduring photos of last season was this one, of total desolation after a defeat to QPR started the bus wobbling before the wheels fell off against Wigan.

He’s given everything to Leeds and we hope he goes on to lift the Championship trophy, although we know he will let the players take all the credit.

We also want his time in the Premier League with Leeds to be a success. Bielsa deserves it.
