Phil Hay has said that Jamie Shackleton was missing from the Leeds United squad tonight through injury.
Marcelo Bielsa made one change to his Leeds line-up for the game against Southampton at Elland Road, with Diego Llorente coming in for the young midfielder.
Writing in a fan Q&A on The Athletic, Hay was asked about Shackleton by a supporter: “Is Shackleton injured Phil or is that just Twitter twaddle?”
Hay replied saying, “Hearing that he’s got a muscle strain.”
It’s bad luck for the 21-year-old, who would have been looking for his third consecutive start in the Premier League.
It could get worse for Leeds, too. Mateusz Klich limped out of the 3-0 win against Southampton tonight.
Talking after the game, Bielsa said that it was too soon to give an assessment on his problem.
Tough luck for Shacks
Leeds fans are big fans of Shackleton and the thinking is that he just needs a run in the first-team to take the step up.
That makes this injury really unfortunate for him. We imagine that had he been fit he would have started tonight and Llorente would have stayed on the bench.
Players like Shackleton are desperate to prove themselves ahead of a summer that’s likely to see more players arriving to take Leeds to the next level.
However, the good news for Leeds is that Llorente came through the 90 minutes.
That was a really big worry after he only lasted 10 minutes when he was rushed back last time, after a Robin Koch injury.
Llorente has barely played since signing but if he can stay fit he’s going to solve a lot of problems for Bielsa at the back.
If Kalvin Phillips and Rodrigo are back for the game against Aston Villa, we’ll be looking at getting back to one of our strongest starting XIs.
Shackleton will be cursing his luck.
