The Athletic’s Phil Hay has suggested that Leeds United boss Marcelo Bielsa might be considering a move to drop Patrick Bamford for the clash against Luton Town.
Bamford has been an ever-present for Leeds this season with Bielsa starting the 26-year-old striker in all but two Championship matches due to an injury he picked up back in December.
Although Bamford scored in the first half of the 3-0 win against Fulham on Saturday, he was substituted off at half-time and Leeds played way better in the second half with Tyler Roberts up front instead.
In a Q&A session on The Athletic website, Hay was asked what the chances are of Roberts, 21, replacing Bamford as the starting striker.
The former Yorkshire Evening Post journalist wouldn’t bet his house on it but he believes that’s an idea Bielsa could be toying with.
“Bielsa is very loyal to Bamford but it must be in his mind,” said Hay.
“All the same, the thing in Bamford’s favour is that Luton are likely to play differently to Fulham. They don’t dominate possession in the same way and pound for pound, they don’t have the same calibre of player.
“So it might be that Bielsa thinks his usual line-up is suited to this. But Roberts is one to watch, as is the decision with Hernandez.”
We don’t think for one second that Bielsa will make a conscious decision to drop Bamford from his starting line-up against Luton.
Bamford has started every single Championship game he has been fit to start this season and there’s no way Bielsa is going to start dropping him now when we’re at such a crucial stage.
Yes, the decision to hook him off at half time against Fulham was fully justified but what’s to say that Bielsa won’t just do the same again?
It is now proven that taking off Bamford and putting Roberts up front can help Leeds win a match so why not stick to that plan if things go pear-shaped versus Luton?
We doubt the Hatters will provide Leeds with too many problems and the Whites should win without having Bamford firing on all cylinders up front.
In other Leeds United news, there’s been an update on this striker who Leeds want with his contract expiring on Tuesday.
