talkSPORT host Jim White has said that the Premier League “needs” Leeds United and dubbed both the club and its supporters as “phenomenal”.

White has been slammed by Leeds fans following his criticism of the club and Marcelo Bielsa over the Spygate issue last season.

He made mention of that in his impassioned monologue but said they deserved “caning” over it

However, he made it very clear what he really thinks about the club ahead of the Championship clash against Luton on Tuesday night, and said he wants to see the “likes of Liverpool and Man United at Elland Road”.

Talking on the White & Sawyer Show (talkSPORT, Monday, 11am) White said, “You have to think Leeds United… another win and they really are motoring. Driving towards automatic promotion.

“I want to see Leeds in the Premier League. I’ll put that out there now. I want them in the Premier League.

“I want to see the likes of Liverpool and Man United at Elland Road. We need them. I want to see their supporters back in the Premier League. They’re phenomenal.

“I’ve always loved them. The history is phenomenal. We caned them about Spygate and I don’t apologise for that, I think they deserved it. But do I want Leeds up? Definitely. If you talk to people in the media, Leeds would be welcome with open arms to the Premier League.”

We’ve criticised White a lot over his handling of Spygate but then Leeds always attract column inches, good or bad – it comes with the territory.

However, we loved this impassioned monologue.

We think he talks for most people in the football world when he says that he wants Leeds back in the top-flight.

The fans are phenomenal. You’ve seen that as the club has sold over 15,000 crowdies to make Elland Road look as homely as possible for the players.

We haven’t seen any other clubs sell anywhere near as many.

If fans are allowed back into Elland Road and Leeds are promoted, it will be almost impossible to get a ticket next season.

White didn’t go as far as to say Marcelo Bielsa is a “phenomenal” manager but we’ll say that now – he’s the man (enabled by Andrea Radrizzani and Victor Orta) who’s made the big step up possible.
