Personally, I’d book it off – Phil Hay predicts when Leeds could secure promotion after 2-0 win
Go back just over a month and things were starting to look desperate for Leeds United.
Losing to Forest made it just two wins in 11 games. The chasing pack had caught up.
What a difference six games make. The draw against Brentford seemed to spark Leeds back to life and since then it’s been five wins in a row without conceding.
What’s more, Nottingham Forest lost this week, while West Brom and Fulham drew.
Leeds are back on top of the Championship and seven points clear of Fulham in third.
A win against Cardiff and then against Fulham the following Wednesday and… well, we can dream.
Athletic journalist Phil Hay has been steering clear of saying anything that could be seen as a jinx for Leeds.
But, writing in a Q&A on the Athletic after the win against Huddersfield, he couldn’t help himself.
Asked after which game he thought Leeds might get promoted, Hay made a bold prediction.
“It’s very difficult to say at this stage because Leeds have a hefty lead… If it was tight you’d expect it to go to the wire but in this form, it could happen sooner. Personally, I’d be taking the Easter weekend off…”
The next four games are Cardiff, Fulham, Luton and Blackburn. Then it’s Stoke on Good Friday and Swansea on Easter Monday.
If Leeds win all of those games they’d have 89 points with three games left.
Even if the teams around them win every game (with Fulham obviously losing to Leeds) they wouldn’t be able to catch Bielsa’s men.
Given the amount of points teams around Leeds are dropping at the moment, it could be an amazing easter for Leeds this year.
