Paul Merson slams Crysencio Summerville after what happened in Leeds United clash v Arsenal

Paul Merson has slammed Leeds United attacker Crysencio Summerville after he failed to convert an excellent opportunity to take the lead against Arsenal on Saturday (1 April).

Javi Gracia’s side started brightly at the Emirates Stadium, carving open several opportunities while keeping the league leaders at bay until Gabriel Jesus’ 35th-minute penalty.

Just minutes before the Gunners took the lead, Summerville was involved in some brilliant build-up play which resulted in him being played in behind the Arsenal back-four, but he squandered the opportunity to take the lead.

“I think Leeds should go 1-0 up here,” Merson said on Sky Sports News on Saturday (1 April, 3:28pm).

“They played some great football on the left-hand side.

“Then Summerville gives a give-and-go and he’s in at the corner of the box.

“I think he should do better.

“He should bend it around the goalkeeper but Ramsdale makes a good save in the end.

“He should do better, still 0-0.”

Turning point

Although Leeds were the heavy outsiders going into the encounter at the Emirates, they started off very brightly and almost found the back of the net within the first 20 seconds of the game.

They also managed to negate a nervous-looking Arsenal attack for large portions of the first 30 minutes, and they certainly deserved to take the lead when Summerville was played in behind.

Moments such as this can change matches, and this was certainly the case against the Gunners.

Just minutes after Ramsdale saved from the Dutchman, Leeds found themselves behind after a clumsy moment by Luke Ayling, who chopped down Jesus in the penalty area.

Gracia would have been extremely frustrated going into half-time, as the Whites were bright in patches, as has been the case for large portions of the season, but failed to put the ball in the back of the net.

The lack of an out-and-out centre forward was evident for Leeds in the early stages of Saturday’s encounter, and the club will be praying Rodrigo can rediscover his early season goalscoring form in the closing weeks of the season.
