Paul Merson makes new Daniel James claim after what he’s witnessed at Leeds United

Paul Merson has dropped his verdict on Dan James after the performance he put in for Leeds United in their Championship clash against West Brom.

Leeds left Elland Road with just one point to their name on Saturday (1 March) after they drew 1-1 against the Baggies.

Daniel Farke’s man managed to further cement their spot at the top of the second-tier table and now have 76 points to their name, despite the below-par performances from some players such as Brenden Aaronson.

James, however, was one of a few Leeds players who proved their worth on Saturday, leaving Merson somewhat in awe of the attacker over what he’s done over the course of the campaign.

Merson believes James is too good for the Championship

It’s hard to think of another player who’s performed to a higher standard than the Welshman this season.

The former Manchester United man has been on top form in the Championship and to be quite frank, it’s hard to see how Leeds would have been as dominant as they have been this term without him among their ranks.

Speaking live on Sky Sports News (1 February, 13:05pm), Merson gave his verdict on the Leeds fan favourite.

“They’ve got the firepower. They’ve got James, who’s miles too good for this league,” he said.

Leeds need to earn promotion to the Premier League

After they narrowly missed out on promotion last season, it feels like the Whites deserve to be a Premier League team, especially after the dominance they’ve shown this term.

Sheffield United have given Leeds a run for their money, but there is no doubt Leeds have been the best side in the division this term – the table doesn’t lie, after all.

Farke’s main goal when the 2024/25 campaign kicked off will have been to make Leeds a top-flight team once again.

And, with the way that things are headed, it seems like that’s going to be the outcome, even accounting for this draw with fellow promotion chasers West Brom.

Of course, football is an everchanging sport and anything can happen, but as long as players such as James can keep up their impressive purple patches of form, it’s hard to see how Farke won’t be able to get his team to the top flight.

Which, at the end of the day, with the quality that the Whites have among their ranks, is likely the least that fans expected from their team this season.
