Paul Merson: Leeds United star has ‘done his hamstring’ v Blackburn

Leeds United have suffered a setback after Jayden Bogle was withdrawn having “done his hamstring”, according to Paul Merson.

Merson, covering the 1-1 draw with Blackburn at Elland Road for Sky Sports Soccer Special [1 January, 16:15], revealed the frustrating news that Bogle has had to limp off, replaced by crucial captain Ethan Ampadu.

Bogle has so far made 22 starts in the Championship so far this season, predominantly as Daniel Farke’s first-choice right-back.

“There’d been a stoppage in play. Bogle has done his hamstring, so he’s gone off,” Merson said.

“Gnonto was changed and ready to come on for him, but the manager changed his mind at the last minute and brought Ampadu on instead.”

Jayden Bogle could face spell out for Leeds United

Bogle has been a virtual ever-present so far this season at Leeds United, only missing the matches against Middlesbrough and Plymouth Argyle through injury and suspension respectively.

Farke will see it as a cruel blow if Bogle is forced to miss much of a busy January, but Sam Byram has been a capable and versatile backup when called upon this term.

Leeds also now have the potential luxury of dipping into the transfer market following the opening of the January window – in which the Whites were already backed to add a couple of acquisitions.

The club ended the summer window with the smallest squad in the Championship, later adding Josuha Guilavogui which made the total number of first-team players 24.

The consensus was that time merely ran out at Elland Road to complete business, with several stars lost to the Premier League.
