‘Oh dear god no’ – Some Leed fans react to EFL update for clash v Reading

The EFL has announced that Australian referee Jarred Gillett has been appointed for the Leeds United game against Reading on Saturday and it’s led to a mixed reaction from fans.

Gillett hasn’t reffed Leeds before and doesn’t have a huge amount of experience in the Championship, officiating three games last season after arriving from the Australian A-League.

It’s his first visit to Elland Road and fans are hoping that he can cope with such a high profile game – some are very concerned that they’ve been given someone so inexperienced at the business end of the Championship.

However, there are plenty of other fans who seem delighted with his appointment and think that Gillett is a Premier League ref in the making.

He’s been the A-League referee of the year five times and has reffed 17 Championship games this season.

There’s a fascinating video of him online (see below) where he’s mic-ed up and he comes across as a solid official with good communication with the players – although he would be on his best behaviour here.

The main worry from fans is his lack of experience but compared to some of the other Championship referees (mentioning no names!) we think this is one of the better appointments for Leeds.

This is what the fans make though. First the negative…

There’s plenty of support for Gillett too, though, and we’ve got hope that he’ll have a good game for us on Saturday. It’s certainly a high profile game so odds are we’ll get the very best of Gillett as he eyes a move up to the Premier League…
