Noel Whelan: Alioski a 'liability', Leeds need new left-back

Noel Whelan has claimed that Gjanni Alioski is a “liability” after Leeds United drew 0-0 with Chelsea on Saturday afternoon.

However, he did praise the team and the result against a high-flying Chelsea side.

“That point is a massive point against a really good outfit,” Whelan said on BBC West Yorkshire Sport.

“Defensively we saw what a fantastic performance it was, the hard work was put in, the battles they had to win… It was absolutely brilliant from Leeds United.”

One Leeds fans said that the club was crying out for a new left-back and Whelan said, “Yes, I agree.

“A natural full-back there that, you know, can cover most bases, definitely defensively because as much as he gives everything, he is a liability, he’s not the best of defenders.

“I think that’s why [in the Chelsea game] you can see a lot going down that left-hand side really targetting Alioski and you saw that frailty there at times.”

Time running out

Alioski has started a lot more games than Leeds fans would have expected this season.

His 19 starts have come amid a number of injuries at the back and to Kalvin Phillips that have seen Stuart Dallas play further up the pitch.

However, Alioski isn’t a natural left-back and is better offensively than he is at defending.

His contract is up in the summer and after Bielsa said the ball was in his court in terms of a new deal, it’s looking likely that he’s going to leave now.

You can’t blame him. He’s not first-choice in a position that’s not his favourite and Leeds are likely to sign a first choice left-back in the summer.

“Liability” is harsh but he’s definitely a player that Leeds would want to upgrade on if they’re looking at the top-half of the table.
