Niall Huggins made his Leeds United debut on Sunday and it was a real baptism of fire for the 20-year-old left-back.

He came on with the game at 4-0 to Arsenal and after Gjanni Alioksi was exposed by a brilliant Bukayo Saka.

Huggins looked solid and with him on the pitch Leeds got the score back to 4-2, winning the second half 2-1.

Talking after the game Marcelo Bielsa acknowledged it was a tough time for any player to make their debut.

He said, “It’s very difficult and unfair on a young player like Niall to come into the game in these circumstances where we’re losing 4-0 and to participate in trying to get us back into the game.

“Had a balanced game. He didn’t shine, but did not do anything bad either.” [Leeds Live]

Writing on Twitter after the game Huggins said, “Not the result we wanted tonight but a proud day for me and my family making my Leeds United debut hopefully more to come.”

Huggins time

We’re pretty sure there will be more to come for Huggins and while some fans have been calling for him to start on Friday against Wolves, we think Bielsa will revert back to Alioski.

Bielsa’s comments were fair. It was a very hard situation for Huggins to deal with and considering that he did really well.

Bielsa is never going to go overboard on praising a youngster but he did say he had a “balanced game” and that he didn’t do anything wrong.

That and the fact that Leeds went from 4-0 to 4-2 with Huggins on the pitch should be praise enough for Huggins.

Athletic journalist Phil hay summed up what we think when he said, “Huggins has had a really decent debut, especially in the circumstances. Been well up to speed.”
