MOT View: Time for Leeds fans to be counted as Burley Banksy forced to quit popular street art

He’s been name-checked on Match of the Day and has been the subject of his very own Sky Sports documentary, but the artist known as the Burley Banksy has announced he’s quitting the majority of his street art as of now.

In two tweets put out on Monday, Andy McVeigh said that he hadn’t got the time or the “emotional energy” to keep repairing art that keeps getting vandalised.

He said he has also been subject to abuse on his own street which has left him scared about his house or van getting damaged.

It’s an appalling reflection on the state of the world when something positive is ruined for no good reason.

McVeigh’s work has come to mean a lot to Leeds’ fans and he gives his time to try to make a difference and put a smile on people’s faces.

It won’t be the end of the Burley Bansky.

McVeigh has said he’s going to carry on with works near Elland Road, and he will carry on painting canvasses and private commissions.

If you want to give him your support – and as Leeds fans it’s the least we can do – you can find out more about McVeigh’s work and see what he’s got for sale at www.burleybanksy.com.

And you can tweet messages of support to @pantsdanny.

We’re gutted that he’s had to make the decision to give up doing his art in places like Burley and Headingly, though.

It’s been a special year for Leeds United and McVeigh was helping to spread that cheer around the city.

It’s probably kids, definitely idiots, and we hope that McVeigh can get past it and start brightening up the city again sometime in the future.
