'Machine', 'Must be so close to first-team' – Some Leeds fans hail 18yo after superb U23 display

The Leeds United Under-23s played against a very solid Middlesbrough side at Thorp Arch on Friday – and the points were secured again by 18-year-old striker Sam Greenwood.

Leeds left it late but won a big three points after a brilliant through pass from Jack Jenkins split the Boro defence, leaving Greenwood to finish clinically.

Mark Jackson named a strong side this afternoon with Robbie Gotts and Jack Harrison both starting – the latter getting a runout as he can’t play against parent club Man City on Saturday.

Mateusz Bogusz, Stuart McKinstry, Sam Greenwood and Joe Gelhardt all started too, giving Leeds plenty of attacking threat.

Unfortunately, Gelhardt went off injured in the 23rd minute but the hope is it’s not too bad. He walked off without any help and it certainly didn’t look too serious.

He’s looked a brilliant buy since arriving from Wigan, turning heads in the 3-1 win against Sunderland at the Academy of Light on Monday.

Greenwood got a hat-trick then but had to settle for the one today.

In the end, the credit for the Leeds’ goal has to go to Jenkins who played an absolutely brilliant through ball to Greenwood after surging into midfield.

Greenwood never looked like missing, though, and Leeds seem to have signed a natural-born finisher from Arsenal. That’s five in three games for the youngster now.

Here are the best reactions to Greenwood’s display on Friday afternoon…
