‘Monster’ – Stan Collymore delivers verdict on Leeds promotion, makes claim about PL and Man Utd
Stan Collymore has compared Leeds United to punk band The Sex Pistols and claimed the club is “a monster”.
He also said the Premier League “should welcome Leeds back with open arms” and said next season needs historical rivalries, such as the one between the Whites and Man United.
Writing in his column in The Mirror, Collymore said, “I draw the line at calling them a monster club because they are just a monster, and I’m delighted they look like being back because they will be a very welcome addition to the Premier League.
“We already know next season will be an odd one, so arguably more than ever we need as many historical rivalries as ever.
“And there is absolutely no doubt that Leeds versus Manchester United, Arsenal, Manchester City or Liverpool will bring in more viewers, eyeballs and revenue than, say, Bournemouth against any of those clubs.”
Collymore went on to say that Leeds should avoid the sort of spending spree that Aston Villa went on and that with “the right couple of additions” they would finish in mid-table next season.
Collymore said it was a case of “when” not “if” Leeds are promoted now but fans are understandably more cautious.
We might know in the next three days, though.
If Brentford drop points against Preston on Wednesday, then a win (or a draw if they lose) against struggling Barnsley will see Leeds guarantee promotion.
And then we can start focussing on Man United!
This season has been so long and weird, with so many twists and turns, and so many different threats to promotion, that the concept still seems abstract to us.
However, that will change as soon as it’s confirmed and Brentford can’t keep on winning… can they?
We’d be a lot more worried if we were West Brom. They play first this gameweek, in a massive top-of-the-table clash against Fulham.
Any slip-up from them could let Brentford steam in and steal second place.
