Mills stunned by what what he saw Woodgate tell Carrick in Leeds v Middlesbrough

Danny Mills was stunned by what he saw Jonathan Woodgate tell Middlesbrough manager Michael Carrick during Leeds United’s 3-1 win on Wednesday night.

The Whites were dominating the early stages of the Championship contest at Elland Road and pushing their opponents back in the opening few minutes with Mateo Joseph leading the line.

Daniel Farke’s side are looking to go back to the top of the league after Sheffield United dropped points on Sunday (8 December) and Woodgate was spotted talking to the Boro manager early on in the clash.

Mills, who played for both clubs during his career revealed his insight into what Woodgate may have said to the visiting manager on talkSPORT2 [10 December, 8:05], saying: “Slightly surprised to see Johnny Woodgate come out and talk to Michael Carrick.

“I’m guessing he is saying we need to get higher up the pitch.”

Leeds United show their quality in the opening minutes

In the opening 25 minutes, the Whites had created 0.43xG compared to the visitors’ 0.02 and had 55 per cent of the possession.

The hosts had three shots compared to Boro’s one in the first 25 minutes and the momentum was firmly in their favour.

Wilfried Gnonto bundled the ball home in the 14th minute to give Leeds the lead and the visitors were struggling to get back into the contest.

That is exactly the type of start that the Whites need to make if they are to ensure promotion to the Premier League.

The Whites missed out on the final day in heartbreaking fashion last season and will be keen not to repeat that pain.

They look to be set to take another big step in their promotion push with a great performance so far.

In other Leeds news, the Whites could be set to land a Manchester City star in January.
