Mateo Joseph slammed after ‘Perfect’ Leeds United moment v Harrogate

Mateo Joseph was blasted by Stephen Warnock for not attacking the box as Leeds United welcomed Harrogate Town to Elland Road on Saturday.

The Whites made several changes against the League Two side on 11 January after being pitted together in the FA Cup third round.

Joseph has not scored for the Whites since October and was frustrated in the opening 45 minutes, hitting the post with a low drive late on.

Speaking live on the BBC Sport website (11 January, 17:53), Warnock was wowed by the work of Wilfried Gnonto, but not what followed.

“What a ball,” he said.

“Absolutely perfect, you’ve got to be busting a gut there if you’re Mateo Joseph to get on the end of that.”

Mateo Joseph must get back in the Leeds United goals

The competitor in Mateo Joseph will be beating himself up consistently over his goal drought for a team with tunnel vision for the Premier League.

The young Spaniard will be applying pressure to his own game but Daniel Farke clearly still trusts him to deliver for his side, with his work-rate and selflessness also contributing considerably.

In the meantime, Joel Piroe is another attacker who has battled for game time this campaign, scoring goals this season from a variety of positions but at times struggling for consistency.

Patrick Bamford is these days a peripheral figure at Elland Road, while Joe Gelhardt barely receives a minute of action and will almost certainly depart this month.

Joseph’s last goal before Saturday’s game with international action included came on 19 November, a wonderful finish for Spain Under-21s against Denmark.

He will want to find the net in the second half.

In other Leeds news, Paul Robinson believes Farke remains under serious pressure at the helm.
