Mateo Joseph hit by new injury today as Leeds United fear emerges

Daniel Farke has shared his “concerns” for Mateo Joseph after the Leeds United forward sustained an injury in the draw with West Brom.

Leeds were held 1-1 by West Brom at Elland Road to consolidate top spot in the Championship, albeit leaving Sheffield United with a chance to pounce.

The game between Leeds and West Brom was fairly end-to-end throughout, and even though Joseph was only brought on for the last 18 minutes, he’s still managed to come away with a new injury.

This is a far from an ideal situation for the West Yorkshire outfit to find themselves in, especially in what is the latter part of the campaign.

Daniel Farke shares update on Joseph injury

The 2024/25 campaign has been one that Joseph will likely want to forget as soon as possible.

Farke often gave the striker the nod at the start of the campaign, but over the last few months, Joel Piroe has slowly made Leeds’ starting striker role his own.

Joseph once again had little impact on the game, but that doesn’t mean he left without any potential ailments.

Speaking to the media after the game, Farke gave an update on the attacker’s condition.

“Concerns about Mateo after a hit. Rolled his ankle a little,” he said in quotes relayed by The Athletic’s Beren Cross via X (1 March).

“Feared I may have to take him off because he was limping, but seemed to settle. Need to assess him.”

Leeds could do without the absence of Joseph

Although Piroe is now the clear favourite to start Leeds’ games, that doesn’t mean that they can go the next couple of weeks without Joseph as an option off the bench.

One of Leeds’ main problems this season has been the focal point of their attacking line, with both Piroe and Joseph often being interchanged.

Farke tried to rectify the situation in the winter transfer window by looking at potential moves for Cameron Archer and Adam Armstrong, but in the end nothing came to fruition.

Patrick Bamford is another option that Farke has among his ranks, but due to his injury-proneness, he’s hardly been afforded the chance to play.

The Whites’ squad is already thin as it is, and although both Willy Gnonto and Largie Ramazani could be played up top if needed, it’s always better to have a natural replacement for players on the bench.

So, here’s hoping that Joseph’s issue isn’t too serious and that he’ll be ready and raring to go for Leeds’ next game against Portsmouth on 9 March.
