Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has highlighted an area of “massive concern” for Leeds United after their 5-2 win against Newcastle.
It was a ruthless attacking display at Elland Road but Leeds conceded yet another goal from a corner, making it eight from set-pieces so far this season.
The goal, from Ciaran Clark, brought Newcastle level before three goals in the final 15 minutes won it for Leeds at a canter.
Hasselbaink said the Clark goal was a “carbon copy” of the Angel Ogbonna goal that won the game for West Ham last Friday.
Talking on Amazon after the game (Wednesday, 8pm) Hasselbaink said, “It’s a carbon copy of the goal against West Ham.
“In the Premier League, it’s a massive concern. In every team in the Premier League you’ve got dominant headers of the ball. Leeds don’t have them.
“Until they have a few matches without those goals against they won’t get that confidence back. They need to try something different, maybe half zonal and half man-marking.”
Maguire on the horizon
Luke Ayling is doing a decent job at centre-back and Marcelo Bielsa obviously prefers him there to Pascal Struijk, who offers height.
But, the defending from the corner last night was pretty awful.
Ayling lost his man and Clark had a pretty easy header for the goal that threatened to take two points away from a brilliant Leeds’ side.
Ayling doesn’t have the height and the physical presence in the box but he’s got to, at the very least, make it hard for the attacker to get a clean head on the ball.
Good defenders make contact with the attacker and throw him off balance or take his eye away from the ball.
Bielsa has acknowledged the problem and says that Leeds are working on it but it’s something that sides will be targeting now.
Man United have Maguire and he’s going to be a real threat from corners. You can’t rely on out-scoring teams like United at Old Trafford.
Or can you?
